Private Hugh McMillan Alexander

 

 

Hugh McMillan Alexander was born on 25 May 1898 at 10 Cherryville Street, Belfast, the last of three children of tram driver Hugh McMillan Alexander and his wife Ellen (nee Harper). His father died when he was just eight years old, and by the time of the 1911 Census he and his sister Agnes were living as boarders in the home of bootmaker Samuel O'Neill in Mountpottinger Road, Belfast.

Alexander enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 12 and 23 April 1918 (Corps of Hussars No.72083). He did not see overseas service during the war, and it is likely that he remained at the regimental reserve depot at Antrim until demobilised in 1919.

After the war Alexander worked as a labourer, living at 47 Epworth Street, Belfast. He died there, of tubercular meningitis, on 23 October 1926, and was buried in the Dundonald Cemetery.
